Bishop gets creamed at Tacky Prom

Matt Marino
Director of Youth Ministries

e-church youth events are bi-monthly, diocese-wide events for high school students. They are  fun, high-energy, and full of surprises. Students can relax, feel safe, be themselves and feel comfortable bringing an unchurched friend. Each event is a mixture of games, music, humor, and friendship building. The evening is topped off with a brief message about Jesus Christ presented by a youth director in the language of kids. So come and bring a friend...or just make new e-church friends across the diocese!

The events this spring were a Dodgeball Tournament, Fear Factor, and Tacky Prom. Next year has a Lock-in, Halloween party, Twister Tournament, a Kickball tournament, and the second annual Dodgeball Tourney. The diocese also has a Teens Encounter Christ, Winter Camp, and a February Colorado Ski Trip planned.

The Tacky Prom was an '80s party on steroids. Sixty of your closest e-church youth peeps partied like it was 1985. Between cheesy line dances and silly "get ready for prom games," they held the "great pizza race" between competing pizza companies to see who could feed us first. Dexter's pizza came last. How were we to know that Bishop Smith moonlights as a driver for Dexter's Pizza? The prize for being last was a pie in the face. The Bishop was a good sport, but he says that Dexter is a pretty tough boss so he may have to give up that gig.

At the end, Trinity Cathedral's new Youth Director, Dijauhn Robinson gave a talk about "come and see," the call of the first disciples Philip to his brother (John 1:46) and the woman at the well to her Samaritan friends (John 4:29). Whether we think we are looking for God (Philip and Nathaniel) or appear defensive and oppositional (the woman at the well), God invites all to "come and see" and surprises us with love and grace when we do.
Special thanks to the folks who helped: Anne Terry, Craig Bustrin, Frederick & Mary Moor, Shantae Carver, and Washington High Young Life for set up and tear down and Slade for video. Also, a special thanks to the Bishop for his honing his pie stopping skills...the next time I play two truths and a lie I am going to use: "I've pied a Bishop...twice!"
